What You Can Do In One Day In Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the largest and capital city of Malaysia. In this city you will experience the true multicultural face of this country. Many immigrants from all over Southeast Asia live here. Therefore, different religions, arts, cultures and above all delicious cuisine from different parts of the continent mix here. Some of the world’s tallest buildings, old Hindu and Buddhist temples will impress you. Chinatown offers a variety of street food and Bukit Bintang will keep you fascinated with its nightlife. You won’t want to leave this place.

HOW TO GET TO KUALA LUMPUR

First let’s figure out how to get from the airport to the city. If your flight lands in Kuala Lumpur and you want to spend a few days here, you have several options for getting from the airport to the city centre. The easiest and most convenient one is a ride via the Grab app. Grab is like Asia’s UBER. Grab will only pick you up on the first floor at door number 4. So before you order it, go to this exit. It will cost you 75 MYR to get to the city centre and the journey will take about 45 minutes depending on traffic.

If you don’t want to take Grab a convenient option is the KLIA Expres train which will take you to KL Sentral station in the city centr. From there you can continue on to the hotel on foot or again with the Grab app. One train ride costs MYR 55 and takes 30 minutes.

Finally the last and also the cheapest option is the bus. Buses to KL Sentral station leave from the ground floor of Terminal 1, Block C. Ticket prices range from MYR 10 per journey and you’ll be in the centre in about an hour.

ACCOMMODATION

You might know from Instagram those photos of swimming pools that are on the rooftops of skyscrapers and you can see the whole city from them. That’s exactly what you can experience in Kuala Lumpur. It doesn’t even have to cost you half your salary. All you have to do is stay in one of the skyscrapers that has such a pool.

WHAT TO DO IN KUALA LUMPURU

You could spend a week in the capital and still have plenty to do. But not many people have that much time, so let’s take a look at the main must-see attractions when visiting this city.

BATU CAVES

The first one is definitely the Hindu shrine of Batu Caves. This is a series of temples built in a large cave complex in front of which stands the tallest statue of the god Murugan in the world. From the city centre it’s easy to get here. Use the Grab app to reach KL Sentral station. At the ticket counter buy a ticket to Batu Caves Station and go to platform 5. A one-way ticket will cost you MYR 2.60. There is no charge to enter the cave complex.

You can also visit the smaller cave complex near the main temple which has what looks like a small zoo and lots of Hindu statues and stones with sacred texts. Here you have to pay MYR 5 for entry.

CHINA TOWN

When you drive back to the city from Batu Caves get off one stop earlier at a station called Kuala Lumpur. From here it’s just a short walk to a very interesting neighbourhood called China Town.

As the name suggests this is Chinatown and you’ll come across lots of interesting places. The first one is definitely Central Market. In the market building you will find countless different shops but also a large food court with lots of local specialties.

From there head to the legendary Petaling Street Market where you can buy goods from various international brands for just a few crowns :-). You can then end your visit to Chinatown at the beautiful Hindu Sri Maha Mariamman Temple.

In the evening don’t miss a stroll in the neighboring Bukit Bintang district. On Jalan Alor Food Street you can enjoy a varied street food dinner washed down at one of the renowned bars on Changkat Street.

PETRONAS TWIN TOWERS

What a visit to Kuala Lumpur would be if we skipped its symbols the Petronas Twin Towers and the Menara TV Tower or KL Tower.

You can visit the world’s tallest twin towers the Petronas Twin Towers completely free of charge. On the lower floors is a business centre which is free to enter. It’s worth a visit just for an afternoon to wander around this mall the surrounding streets and the neighboring park.

If you would like to see the higher floors, you can visit the bridge connecting the twin towers between floors 41 and 42. However, there you have to pay an entrance fee of MYR 98.

To visit the Menara TV Tower you need to pay an entrance fee of MYR 110. Apart from the platform with its unique view of the city you can also visit the astronomical observatory or the revolving restaurant.

TIPS for visiting KUALA LUMPUR

A short walk from our recommended accommodation and also on the way to the Petronas Twin Towers is a great local eatery, Restoran Nasi Kandar Pelita. You can eat here for just a few crowns and the food tastes absolutely delicious.

If you need quick and cheap transport around the city, use the Grab app. Seriously trust us it’s the best app for short-distance transport in Malaysia.

WATCH OUT in KUALA LUMPUR

When visiting Batu Caves be sure to watch out for monkeys. Macaques are everywhere and love to steal things and food. As soon as something is peeking out of your backpack they will steal it. Likewise hats and sunglasses on your head are very tempting for macaques :-).

Keep in mind that you have to go to Batu Caves with your shoulders and knees covered. If you go here you must be properly dressed. For example if you come here in shorts you will only be allowed into the cave if you rent a bandana at the entrance for MYR 15.
