Eight Phone Apps You Need To Know As A Traveler
A mobile phone is a must-have thing today and perhaps none of us can do without it anymore. Many people consider it an evil of our time, others consider it a useful gadget or even a fashion accessory. It is true that if we already have these phones, it would be a shame not to use their functions. Especially when travelling smartphones nowadays offer us a lot of options and phone apps that will ultimately save us a lot of time and even money. We ourselves use many of phone apps a lot when we travel and, in truth, we can’t even imagine travelling without them anymore. So let’s take a look at the ones that make travelling the easiest.
OUR FAVOURITE PHONE APPS!
Skyscanner
This is definitely one of our most used from favourite phone apps. It is a flight search engine that compares prices from different retailers and airlines at the same time. It’s basically like Heureka.cz, but with airline tickets :-). In the app you can set up notifications when the price of the ticket you are interested in changes. As soon as the price changes, you will receive an email and you can buy the ticket.
There is also an option to configure the cheapest price of the month, or to search for a “Multi City” ticket, which you can use when you want to visit more cities or countries in one trip. Another advantage of the app is that when you are undecided, you just enter the place you want to fly from and type the word “Anywhere” in the destination. In this case, the app will offer you all the available flights from your destination sorted from the cheapest one.
For example, you can filter the number of stopovers and their duration, or the time of day of departure. You can also search for accommodation or car rental in the app. Once you have found a flight that suits you, just go directly to the airline’s website and purchase the ticket. Why directly on the company’s website? That’s what we talked about in this article.
Booking.com
The most widespread and most used booking portal for accommodation is clearly booking.com. They also reward you for using the app regularly. With a certain number of bookings, you are automatically entered into the “Genius” loyalty program, which allows you to upgrade your room for free, provide a free breakfast or give you a 15 % discount on your accommodation. With this program, you can usually even get a lower rate than the hotel offers, for example, on their website or when you contact them in person. Right in the app there is also the possibility of booking a car, taxi or information about interesting places in the area you are going to. In addition, booking.com sends secret or special offers to registered users, so it’s definitely worth enabling the company to send offers directly to your email. Sometimes you can get a really great price.
Couchsurfing
Would you most like to stay for free when you travel? Then try the Couchsurfing app. You can stay completely free through it. All you have to do is register on the app, fill in your profile very carefully and truthfully and you’re good to go. You’ll find offers from people who only have a spare couch at home and will give it to you for free.
It’s definitely a good idea to spend some time with your host, invite them to dinner or a drink and share your story. In return, he or she will provide you with a place to sleep and show you around unusual places in the area. If you also have a spare couch at home, feel free to become one of the hosts at the same time. You’ll meet lots of new friends from all over the world, and maybe this will open up more opportunities for you to travel.
Rome2Rio
Do you prefer to use local transport, do you want to travel by bus, train or just find out the best options to get from A to B? If so the Rome2Rio app is just the app for you. Just enter your starting point, set your destination in the second field and that’s it. The app will show you all available transport options, including estimated prices, departure times and journey times. The advantage is that you can use this app all over the world. You’ll also find tips for trips from where you are. So if you don’t know where to go for the weekend, you can let the app decide for you. It will find you connections, determine the time commitment and tell you how much the trip will cost. On some connections, the app even allows you to buy a ticket directly from your phone.
Maps.me
This is probably the most widely used map app among travelers. In addition to the classic features like planning your route, saving your favorite places, or displaying different route options, it includes several other useful features. One of them is to easily find the bus stop from which buses depart to your destination. For example, if you’re somewhere in Mexico, just type “Bus to Mexico City” into the app’s search engine and the app will show you the nearest bus stop from which the bus to Mexico City departs. When you zoom in on the map, it will also show nearby tourist attractions and points of interest, sometimes even with admission information.
What is an absolute advantage over competing apps is the knowledge of even the narrowest and most hidden roads and alleys. So if you want to head out into the countryside in some unknown place and don’t know which way, this app will tell you.
Maps.me wallet
Worried about losing your signal in the countryside? In this case it doesn’t matter at all, the app automatically downloads maps of the area you are currently in. So you can view everything at any time even without an internet connection. And if there’s an obstacle on the road, or if the road is closed, you’ll see a barrier or information about the closure when you zoom in on the map.
Still not enough? Then you may be convinced by the newly planned Maps.me “Wallet” feature. Yes, in this app you will be able to order a VISA card that can be used to pay worldwide. You simply top up your wallet with credit from your account then exchange you currency for one of 37 currencies in the app at an exchange rate that is much better than in the bank. You’ll also get up to 10 % back for each payment with this card. Sending money to other users or various savings options are a matter of course. You can even click through to booking.com directly from the app and book accommodation near where you are. Whew, what an app :-).
Where Is Public Toilet
Today it is very crazy how many and for what the phone apps could be. BUT! Whoever developed this app definitely deserves an award. When you open it, you’ll see a map showing you all the public toilets near you that you can use, all over the world. The app will also show you things like restaurants that will let you use the bathroom for a small fee, and in some places even wheelchair accessible toilets or toilets with a changing area. We have tried it in several countries around the world and it has never let us down. It really finds even the most backward toilet that you can use without worry :-). You can even download the map to your phone so you don’t even need an internet connection to use it.
HappyCow
This phone app will also show you a map when you open it. However, on it you will find restaurants with healthy food or different diet options. Immediately in your area you will see, for example, vegan and vegetarian restaurants, establishments offering gluten-free food, or just restaurants that are willing to customize their food offerings for you. After registering, you can also interact with other users and share your feelings about visiting different establishments. It also has the advantage of displaying opening times, other users’ ratings and the price category of the establishment. Restaurant descriptions, menus and for some photos are just a nice bonus. For us is the best one from all the phone apps that search restaurants with special diets.
Countries Been
And finally, we come to the last app to record all your travels :-). The app is a globe, where you simply click on the place where you are now, or which you have visited in the past, and simply tick it off. You can record entire countries as well as individual cities. You can even make a note of places you have yet to visit. Once you’ve registered, you’re sure to never lose your data again, and when you’ve visited enough places, you can show them off by sharing them on social media. But keep in mind that travel is not a race and how many places you end up visiting is not important at all. As the opening tagline of this app says…
